History

In 1829 Johann Abraham Schmidt, who was trained in the art of putting table knives together, founded J.A. Schmidt & Söhne, not far from today's location in Solingen Gräfrath. They produced pocket-, table- and meat-knives. Their products were mainly sold at trade fairs in Naumburg and Leipzig. As family chronicle writes: "The journey to Leipzig took 10 days by foot marching 10 hours daily, later it would take a long drive of three days and three nights to get there from Elberfeld by mail, [...] For this you had to register 8 days in advance".
In contrast to back then the main focus for trade is in specialized trade, traveling also has become a lot more convenient. The trademark Dreiturm was registered in 1856.

When Johann Schmidt's son Gustavo Schmidt took over the business in 1890 production already took place in new buildings. To this day Dreiturm goods are manufactured on this very property on Wernerstrasse (Werner Street). Also still the same is the manufacturing process. Since our beginnings as a manufacture we've worked only with the best experts in this field.

In the 19th century the business was taken over by sons of the following generation. Today's CEO, Axel Schmidt, went into the business in 1973. He is leading J.A. Schmidt & Söhne in its 5th generation. His daughter Maike Schmidt-Gäbel has been working in the company since 2004.

We are as proud of our family tradition as we are of our location and our products. Being close to tradition and the experience that has been passed on from generation to generation are an inestimable value for us. Did you know - on August 1st, 2014 we celebrated our 185. birthday!

DREITURM is the brand that indicates the highest quality made in Solingen - since 1829.
